This well maintained section of the Backbone Trail crosses fields of grains and forests of bays, climbing 1,750 feet over 4.7 miles one way.
I hiked this trail in the summer which is not the best time since the views are marred by the seasonal L.A. smog. It’s best to come on a clear day in the winter or spring. The trail is about 50 percent shaded so summer hiking is reasonably cool. Watch out for poison oak in overgrown parts.
At the top, you will see a sign that offers a short hike to Lois Even Overlook.
This will add another 1.5 mile to your hike if you decide to take a look. This is a good trainer hike for more vigorous journeys at higher altitudes.
