The Santa Ynez Canyon to Trippet Ranch trek is a good all-around family hike with plenty to see and do.
The trail can also serve as a nice back entrance to Topanga State Park. The 5 mile round trip starts in the canyon and climbs above to take in some of the area’s trademark ocean views and sandstone geology. It’s a good workout in and of itself, but it can easily be extended once you arrive at the Trippet Ranch area of Topanga State Park.
Descend from the gate on Vereda de La Montura in the Pacific Palisades and begin along the single-track trail. Use the concrete stepping stones to cross the water flowing down a runoff channel and leave the urban world behind. Cross through a dense forest to the first of many creek crossings and caves. Rock hop the babbling waters and follow the wooded trail leading to a junction. Turn left to Trippet Ranch (your destination).
